Freedom From Hunger Uses 'Credit With Education' Program To Fight AIDS Pandemic in Africa

"Women living in rural areas are more susceptible to the disease because they have fewer resources and less access to education."

As the number of people living with HIV/AIDS continues to spiral out of control in many developing countries, Freedom from Hunger has found a way to address the disease through its Credit with Education program.

Credit with Education offers cash loans along with health and business education to groups of women in developing countries. The education sessions are presented during weekly meetings and cover topics such as breastfeeding, infant and child feeding, family planning, diarrhea prevention and treatment, and immunizations. About four years ago, Freedom from Hunger introduced the topic of HIV/AIDS into the education series.

Women living in rural areas are more susceptible to the disease because they have fewer resources and less access to education. In light of this fact, Freedom from Hunger has recently revised the HIV/AIDS education series in partnership with World Relief.

The education module is designed for use in group-based programs such as Credit with Education and focuses on generating individual and community action to prevent the spread of HIV and to care for individuals who are suffering from AIDS. The 12 learning sessions in the module help participants to:

  • Clear up misconceptions about how HIV is spread
  • Find practical options for protecting their health
  • Understand the implications of pregnancy with HIV
  • Identify local sources for testing, counseling and medical treatment
  • Plan for the future of their families when a member is infected
  • Educate and mobilize their communities to prevent HIV/AIDS

The new HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care module will be available in July 2002.
